Teen Challenge
Teen Challenge of Kentucky exists to evangelize people who have life-controlling problems and initiate the discipleship process to the point where the student can function in society applying spiritually motivated Biblical principles to relationships in the family, local church, chosen vocation, and the community. Teen Challenge endeavors to help people become mentally sound, emotionally balanced, socially adjusted, physically well and spiritually alive.
In July 2003, we opened Priscilla's Place, a 5-week residential crisis program for women 18 and over, located in a beautifully restored Victorian home in Louisville, KY. We have now seen over 100 women come through the doors of Priscilla's Place and receive a clear gospel witness! Many of the women who complete their 5 weeks will continue their recovery by enrolling in a long-term Teen Challenge center. We are constantly receiving testimonies of how our graduates are not only doing well themselves, but are making a difference in the lives of those around them.
In April 2005, Grace House, Teen Challenge of Evansville, IN opened its doors just two hours west of Louisville. Grace House provides the long-term residential care for women in our region. Grace House is located on the 2nd floor of the Evansville Christian Life Center, a former Catholic monastery that now houses several different ministries. Grace House offers 23 private rooms, providing long-term recovery in a home atmosphere.
Recently, Kentucky Lt. Governor Steve Pence reported that in the state of Kentucky, only 8% of drug addicts will enter a residential program. This startling truth makes non-residential ministry imperative. Teen Challenge of Kentucky is currently overseeing eight non-residential, support group based programs called Lifeline ministries. Lifeline provides hope and help to those struggling with addictions who may not be able to enter a residential program. As with our residential programs, students involved with Lifeline are assisted in developing a Life Plan for the future based on the five components of recovery: decision, positive peer choice, accountability, boundaries, and consistency. Lifeline of Clay County, KY has been so effective in ministering to the addicted in their area that Congressman Hal Rogers is not only recommending Lifeline, but has set a goal to see a Lifeline ministry started in each of eastern Kentucky's 29 counties by the end of the summer of 2005!
Realizing that almost everyone is affected in some way by a life-controlling problem, it is imperative that local churches be trained in how to minister to those with life-controlling problems! Turning Point, a ministry based out of Chattanooga, TN, offers that training, called Living Free, and provides the curriculum to help local churches become effective in dealing with these issues. Teen Challenge of Kentucky Executive Director, Clayton Arp, is a certified Turning Point trainer, conducting training seminars all over Kentucky, Indiana and beyond. His wife, Beth, facilitates three Turning Point groups weekly at the Louisville Metro Corrections facility.
